Did you know Oklahoma City has had 35 mayors, but only four have been elected to a third term? Mayor Mick Cornett, who first took office on March 2, 2004, will be the special guest speaker this week at the Rotary Club of Edmond.

    Think of what has happened in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area since Cornett became mayor. Under Cornett’s leadership, the City has seen the final completion of MAPS 1, the implementation of MAPS for Kids, and the passage and implementation of MAPS 3. Oklahoma City literally became a major league city, with the National Basketball Association temporarily housing the New Orleans Hornets and later permanently moving the Oklahoma City Thunder. The area’s economy has been among the strongest in the nation. More than ever before, people around the country are seeing Oklahoma City and central Oklahoma for the great places they are.

    Born and raised in Oklahoma City, Cornett graduated from Putnam City High School. He went on to earn a degree in journalism from the University of Oklahoma, and later served his alma mater as a journalism professor.

    Cornett spent twenty years as a local television sports and news personality, working as a reporter, anchor and manager. He also worked as a newspaper columnist and a sports play-by-play announcer.

    An Executive Vice President at Ackerman McQueen, a full service marketing, advertising and public relations agency, Cornett was named “Advertising Man of the Year” in 2010 by the Oklahoma City Ad Club. He and his wife, Lisa, began dating when they were high school sophomores. They have raised three sons – Michael, Casey and Tristan – and attend Crossings Community Church.
