“Our success or failure will not depend upon the machinery of Rotary or its physical growth, but upon the extent to which Rotary’s ideals or objectives are translated into positive, tangible results in personal, business, community, and international life. We shall be known by our works.” So wrote Almon E. Roth, Rotary International president over 80 years ago.

Though the thought may not have been original, it is still a good measuring stick. Are Rotarians are living up to our ideals. What can we say about the Rotary Club of Edmond?

I think we measure up well. Consider. We work with Ida Freeman Elementary School, and do so in several ways. We read to students through Rotary Readers. We add to the school library, donating books personally inscribed by our speakers. We annually recognize the Teacher of the Year. Last year, we applied for and received a District Simplified Grant, which, coupled with our own donation, provided a much needed video camera for Ida Freeman. This year, we applied for and received another District Simplified Grant which, together with our own donation, supplied Ida Freeman with books, DVDs, CDs, and portable DVD players for the English as a Second Language program.

We sponsor a Four-Way Test Contest, honoring a local business that exemplifies what the Rotary International ideals: Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned? Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? We also hold a Four-Way Test Speech Contest for high school students, the winners of which receive significant financial awards. And we host Career Shadow Day, which gives high school students a great opportunity to learn more about their potential calling.

We sponsor RYLA students, outbound and inbound Ambassadorial Scholars, and even foreign exchange students. We pick up trash along a two-mile stretch of roadway in Edmond. We’ve helped at the Endeavor Games. We have even purchased several ShelterBoxes, helping families in disaster zones.

Does that seem like a lot? Well, there is much more. But let me save that for next week.
