I grew up in Poteau, Oklahoma, not far across the border with Ft. Smith, Arkansas. We got Ft. Smith television stations. My grandparents live in Marietta, Oklahoma. They have satellite. They get local stations from Texas.
Federal law gives satellite providers a statutory license to secondarily transmit network broadcasts. The problem arises in counties near the state border. The “market” for a station can be defined to include counties across the border when there is no close in-state station transmitting. This can cause satellite customers to get “local” stations from out-of-state.
Congressman Dan Boren (D-OK) has introduced a bill to resolve this situation. H.R. 505 would amend the law to provide that Oklahoma satellite customers (and it only applies in Oklahoma) who receive a secondary transmission of out-of-state stations could elect to receive Oklahoma stations instead. If it becomes law, I am sure border county Sooner fans will rejoice!
