Two years ago, under Past-President Mitzi Hancuff’s leadership, the Rotary Club of Edmond purchased a ShelterBox – a container sent to a disaster zone that provides a tent, a stove, a water purification kit, blankets, tools, and other necessities to help a family of 10 survive for six months – which was deployed in Pandang, Sumatra. Last year, in response to the earthquake in Haiti, the Rotary Club of Edmond purchased three additional ShelterBoxes.
Over the last several weeks, two of our members have stepped forward with funds for two additional ShelterBoxes. Additionally, the Rotary Club of Edmond will match donations, up to a total of $1,000, to purchase another two ShelterBoxes. Allison told me we have already raised $576, which means we are only $424 short of raising the entire amount. This week is the last week for contributions. Checks should be made payable to the Rotary Club of Edmond Foundation, Inc., and designated for ShelterBox.
Community Service at the Rotary Club of Edmond
This week is one of my favorites on the Rotary Club of Edmond calendar, for we recognize the winners of several of our community and scholarship programs. Two are related to the Four-Way Test:
Of all the things we think, say or do:
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
The Four-Way Test Contest honors a business or person who exemplifies the Four-Way Test. In the Four-Way Test Speech Contest, high school students compete for scholarships based on their own speeches concerning the Four-Way Test.
The Rotary Club of Edmond will also honor the Ida Freeman Elementary School Teacher of the Year. This is one part of our Club’s special relationship with Ida Freeman.
We will also honor our 2010-2011 Scholarship winners. After you learn about these amazing high school students, you will better understand the great hope for the future the Edmond community is so blessed to have.
I look forward to seeing you this week as we honor the winners of these community and scholarship programs of the Rotary Club of Edmond.
