Why the High Cost for Prescription Drugs?
William C. Orr, Diplomate of the American Board of Sleep Medicine, will answer that question at the next meeting of the Rotary Club of Edmond. Dr. Orr, who was the first certified sleep professional in Oklahoma and was in the first group of American medical professionals certified in sleep medicine, was a pioneer in establishing the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
Dr. Orr established Oklahoma’s first clinical sleep facility in 1975 at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, where he is Clinical Professor of Medicine. He is also Adjunct Professor at the United States Air Force Academy, and has held a faculty position at Northeastern Ohio University’s College of Medicine.
President and CEO of the Lynn Health Science Institute, Orr has published extensively on a wide variety of topics in sleep medicine. His publications include some of the initial descriptions of the sleep apnea syndrome and its pathophysiology.
Dr. Orr’s interests also include a variety of gastrointestinal disease topics, including the role of sleep in the pathogenesis of acid reflux disease. He has published and lectured extensively on topics in sleep medicine and gastroenterology, including the neurobiology of sleep and the pathogenesis of excessive daytime sleepiness.
A Fellow in the American College of Gastroenterology, Dr. Orr has served on its Research Committee and the Educational Affairs Committee. He served as a member of the board of Directors of the National Sleep Foundation from 1990-2005. He was recently honored as one of the Significant Early Contributors to Sleep Medicine by the Sleep Research Society. He also received a Service Award from the National Sleep Foundation in 2006.
Please welcome Dr. William C. Orr to the Rotary Club of Edmond.
Miscellaneous
Several Edmond Rotarians may be entitled to receive a “make up” for their help on recent Rotary Club of Edmond activities – e.g., the Barbeque over Memorial Day or the Blood Drive. If you qualify, please let Allison know. The Rotary year is about to end, and we want to make sure we recognize all members who have perfect attendance.
Next week only – June 15 – the Rotary Club of Edmond will meet at the Downtown Community Center. More on that in my next email.
