biography

Matt Hopkins attended Baylor University, the University of Oklahoma, and obtained his B.A., Magna Cum Laude, from Oklahoma Baptist University in 1990.  He received a J.D., with Honors, from the University of Oklahoma.  During Law School he was invited to join the Ruth Bader Ginsburg American Inn of Court, and was named to the Order of the Coif, a prestigious nationwide organization of legal scholars.  He was the top student in both water law and education law.

In the mid 1980s Matt began working in public policy and politics.  He has worked at high levels in numerous state-wide races, and was acting campaign manager for Governor Brad Henry’s first gubernatorial bid.  He has worked as a consultant for and currently serves on the Finance Committee of the national Democratic Governor’s Association.  He has been a major fundraiser for candidates, committees and causes in Oklahoma and nationally.  In 2003, Governor Brad Henry appointed him to act as coordinator of Henry’s transition team.  Hopkins worked to ensure a smooth transition from the former administration and oversaw all aspects of the transition team and its numerous committees.  Since 2003, Hopkins has worked closely with Henry and his administration.

Prior to his work at the firm, Matt was a founding partner of Henry, Canavan and Hopkins, in Shawnee.  He practiced with Governor Brad Henry for numerous years prior to Henry’s election.  Matt also acted as the coordinator of the Oklahoma Drug and Alcohol Policy Board from 1991 to 1993. He worked in the office of the Oklahoma Attorney General prior to and during law school.

Matt has been involved in numerous philanthropic organizations, and has served on numerous boards and commissions, including the Board of Directors of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, and the Boards of the National Federation of Parents, the Oklahoma Arts Institute, Friends of the Governor’s Mansion, the Shawnee Education Foundation, Gateway to Recovery, the Jasmine Moran Children’s Museum, Blue Wolfe Investments, Silverthorne Productions, and Playtime Distributing of Texas.  Hopkins is a graduate of Leadership Shawnee.  He has spoken before many groups in Oklahoma, including the Academy for State Goals and the Oklahoma Symposium.

Hopkins has represented several governmental agencies and numerous fortune five hundred and other large companies, including Goldman Sachs & Company, PBS&J, Scientific Games, Corrections Concepts, Inc., Data Recognition Corporation, and Fenton Motors Group, Inc.  In addition to his law practice, Hopkins is a registered lobbyist and acts as a general business consultant for numerous large companies in Oklahoma and throughout the nation.
