During law school, Thompson clerked two years at the influential Washington, D.C., governmental relations law firm of Williams & Jensen, clerked for the Oklahoma Governor’s General Counsel and served as a legal intern for Oklahoma Supreme Court Justice Ralph Hodges. Thompson authored a chapter in a 1996 report commissioned by the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee entitled, The War Powers Resolution: Origins, History, Criticism and Reform.
After law school, Thompson worked on Capitol Hill for Congressman Bill Brewster of Oklahoma, handling tax and labor issues, and for Congressman James Maloney of Connecticut. After returning to Oklahoma, he interned in the General Counsel Division of the Oklahoma Attorney General's office. Upon passing the Oklahoma bar, Thompson became a member of the team of private attorneys representing the State of Oklahoma in its landmark lawsuit against the tobacco industry.
In February 2004, Governor Brad Henry appointed Thompson to the Long Range Capital Planning Commission, a commission which prepares the Capital Improvement Plan for addressing the capital facility needs of the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education and all state agencies. He is currently serving his second term as Chairman of the LRCPC, after previously serving two terms as Vice-Chairman.
Thompson is a graduate of Leadership Edmond and served as a member of the Leadership Edmond Alumni Board and Chairman of the Leadership Edmond Alumni Council. He is also active in the Edmond Economic Development Partners and the Edmond Chamber of Commerce, where he has served as a member and co-chair of the Governmental Relations Council, a position that allowed him to advocate business issues to state and federal legislators.
Thompson was selected by OKCBusiness as one of its 2004 Forty Under 40 business leaders in the Oklahoma City metro area. He has also served as Vice-Chairman of both the Oklahoma State Bar Association’s Legislative Monitoring Committee and Diversity Committee and still serves as a member of both committees. Thompson is a Fellow of the Litigation Council of America. Thompson has been an Adjunct Professor of Political Science at the Oklahoma City Campus of Oklahoma State University, teaching American Government. He serves on the Carl Albert State College Development Foundation Board of Trustees.
Thompson also spends as much time as he can volunteering at his son's school. He regularly serves as a guest reader, recently taught a computer class for 3rd through 5th graders and often works as a WATCH D.O.G. dad. A life-long sports fan, Thompson was selected as the top football scholar-athlete in Oklahoma his senior year in high school by the Oklahoma Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. He was then selected to an all-star exhibition football team that became the first American football team to play in the Soviet Union. Games in Moscow, Tallin and Leningrad (St. Petersburg) drew a total of more than 50,000 people. In 2000, Thompson was inducted into the Poteau Athletic Hall of Fame. Thompson frequently coaches little league team sports, including football, soccer and baseball.
An avid computer and technology junkie, Thompson also serves as the Electronic Discovery and Technology Partner for the firm He has spoken on banking issues to the Oklahoma Bankers Association, the Oklahoma State Banking Department and the Oklahoma Society of CPAs. He is a member of the Robert J. Turner American Inn of Court. He has numerous published opinions in both state and federal appellate courts. Thompson is admitted to practice in both Maryland and Oklahoma.
